Privacy and Data Retention

Many businesses collect and process sensitive data in their daily operations. As organizations, it is critical to understand what personal or other sensitive data is being collected and maintained and how such data is being managed and protected. One of the biggest problems is that we live in a data-driven world, where data is used everyday to enhance business and our personal lives. However, due to the nature of this data and ever-increasing technology, risks continue to surface which could expose this sensitive data. Organizations are now being forced to only collect the data that is required for the purpose of their business and then delete or anonymize it once it is no longer needed.

This is no longer an IT problem, it is also critical that all individuals or employees, including contractors, understand the importance of protecting this sensitive data during their everyday job responsibilities. Companies are now being required to comply with increasingly tighter legal requirements (including notifications of breaches) or face significant fines and penalties.

Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity

Business interruptions whether it be a disaster or crisis are unpredictable by nature and can strike at any time with little or no warning. Recovering from such interruptions can be stressful, expensive and time consuming, particularly for those organizations who have not taken the time to think ahead and prepare for such possibilities. However, organizations who have effective recovery plans are able to withstand such events comparatively, with minimal loss or disruption.

Disaster recovery is a component for building organizational resilience through identifying the probability and likelihood of potential risks, then developing and maintaining information technology (IT) recovery procedures, in the unfortunate event a disaster were to occur. Equally, business continuity provides a framework for building organizational resilience and the capability for an effective response through managing processes to potential risks, threats, and vulnerabilities that could affect continued operations. Understanding the difference between the two, as well as, how to initiate and maintain these plans are often the biggest pitfall to an organization’s ability to remain resilient.

After the training session, we'll be hosting a happy hour, including some hors d'ourves and drinks.

Speakers: Eric Fair, CISA, CBCLA, IT Risk Advisory Manager at Schneider Downs
