Join us for an engaging one-day workshop designed for cybersecurity professionals, security managers, governance practitioners, auditors, risk managers, and technical leaders seeking to better understand how effective data governance strengthens cybersecurity and organizational resilience. This practical, instructor-led program introduces the principles of data governance and demonstrates how organizations can manage data as a strategic enterprise asset while supporting confidentiality, integrity, availability, privacy, regulatory compliance, and informed decision-making.

Participants will explore the core components of a modern data governance program, including governance structures, data ownership, stewardship, metadata management, data quality, data lifecycle management, data classification, and security governance. The course also examines how data governance supports Federal cybersecurity initiatives through alignment with frameworks such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0, NIST Privacy Framework, NIST AI Risk Management Framework (AI RMF), and other guidance.
Through case studies, group discussions, and end-of-module quizzes, attendees will learn how to identify governance challenges, establish accountability, improve data quality, reduce organizational risk, and integrate data governance into enterprise cybersecurity programs.

By the end of the course, participants will understand how effective data governance enables stronger cybersecurity, supports regulatory compliance, improves organizational decision-making, and enhances the protection of critical information assets.

Course Format:
Blended learning with insightful lectures, practical demonstrations, interactive discussions, group activities, and case studies.
Course Prerequisites: 
None. A basic understanding of cybersecurity concepts, information security management, or risk management is helpful but not required.
Course Schedule:
One day, 7 hours inclusive of breaks. A detailed schedule will be provided before the workshop.

  • Understand the fundamental principles of data governance and its relationship to cybersecurity, privacy, risk management, and organizational resilience.
  • Explain how data functions as a strategic organizational asset and why effective governance is essential for protecting and managing enterprise information.
  • Identify key data governance roles, including executive leadership, data owners, data stewards, custodians, and governance councils.
  • Describe the components of an effective data governance framework, including policies, standards, decision rights, accountability, and organizational oversight.
  • Apply data classification, metadata management, and data lifecycle management principles to improve cybersecurity and regulatory compliance.
  • Recognize the importance of data quality, master data, reference data, and metadata in supporting secure and trustworthy business operations.
  • Integrate data governance concepts with cybersecurity frameworks including NIST CSF 2.0, NIST Privacy Framework, NIST AI RMF, and Federal information security requirements.
  • Identify governance considerations associated with cloud computing, artificial intelligence, data sharing, and emerging technologies.
  • Assess organizational data governance maturity and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Develop a practical roadmap for establishing or enhancing a cybersecurity-focused data governance program.

Instructor Bio: Jim Wiggins
Jim Wiggins is a seasoned IT and cybersecurity expert with over 29 years of industry experience, 24 of which have been dedicated to information security. He is the Founder and CEO of Securible, LLC, a Washington, DC-based cybersecurity training and consulting firm specializing in practical, forward-thinking solutions.
