Details: Our nation’s police departments are under intense pressure to keep crime rates low despite reduced manpower and budgets. Police officers rely on security professionals as force multipliers: extra sets of eyes on the street that can observe, monitor and report trends. Security professionals, in turn, appreciate police alerts of possible threats in the area, and bulletins of wanted suspects. Two-way communication, across a variety of methods, enhances mutual respect and coordination between private and public sector law enforcement.
During this event, you will hear from our Kansas City Missouri Police Chief, Colonel Richard Smith, about collaborative resources that can help improve your organizations’ security posture. These resources include the Kansas City Regional Fusion Center, Crime Stoppers, and more.

Guest Speaker: Colonel Richard Smith was born and raised in St. Paul, Minn. He came to Kansas City in 1987 to be an officer of the Kansas City Police Department. After serving as an officer at Central Patrol Division and on the Tactical Response Team, he worked as a detective in the Robbery Unit.
He was promoted to sergeant in 1998, the same year he earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Park University. After an assignment in the South Patrol Division, Smith went to the Homicide Unit, where he was the supervisor of the Police Shooting Team. Smith was promoted to captain in 2003, and he served in that position at South and East patrol divisions, in the Planning and Research Division and on the Tactical Response Team.
In 2008, he graduated from the FBI National Academy. He earned a master’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Central Missouri in 2008. Upon his promotion to major in 2014, Smith was assigned to the East Patrol Division – the city’s busiest. He transferred to oversee the Kansas City No Violence Alliance in 2015 and then to command Central Patrol Division in 2016.
In 2017, he was selected as the Kansas City Missouri Police Department Chief of Police where he has focused on empowering KCPD Officers to a path of success, driving violent crime down, and enabling efficiencies through strong partnerships.
