Rise of Digital Applications and their Impact on Privacy: Privacy is an important topic for governments, enterprises as well as individuals. This session will answer some of the basic yet critical questions about privacy in the context of today’s digital economy.
• What is privacy in general (in recent times and in history)?
o Privacy word has French origin in privauté, which means “a secret or a secrete deed”. Privacy also has a Greek history. Aristotle distinguished between two spheres of life: the public sphere associated with political life and the private one of the domestic life. In summary, privacy is an important principle that one can practice for managing life affairs.
• What is privacy in the context of today’s digital world?
o In today’s digital world, privacy is all about distinguishing various forms of digital information (using technology and processes) to manage your life affairs.
• Why has privacy become so important in today’s digital world?
o Digital information spreads must faster (than in medieval times where dissemination of information was constrained by physical distances and means of transportation). In today’s digital world, the rate and scale at which information can be disseminated has grown exponentially (almost at the speed of light). Therefore, newer sets of laws and regulations were needed to define what information constitutes privacy and who can access such information to manage our life affairs.
• What is considered private information today?
o Canada has one of world’s leading privacy frameworks in place (in terms of laws and policies). The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada through The Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) defines the personal information as any factual or subjective information, recorded or not, about an identifiable individual. That may include: o Age, name, ID numbers, income, ethnic origin, or blood type; o Opinions, evaluations, comments, social status, or disciplinary actions; and o Employee files, credit records, loan records, medical records, existence of a dispute between a consumer and a merchant, intentions (for example, to acquire goods or services, or change jobs).
• Is there a difference between private information and personal information?
o Yes, information that CAN be used to identify you, such as your Social Security number, street address, email, phone number, etc., are classified as private information o Information that CAN NOT be used to identify you, such as your age, gender, how many siblings you have, your favorite food, etc. are classified as personal information.
• How digital applications are prone to compromising our privacy?
o Digital applications (such as health tracking or menstrual period tracking mobile apps) can record your personal information such as name, age, gender, medical/health status, etc. These data can be shared with other developers and/or service providers, which may compromise your privacy.
