Background: Protecting classified data is mandatory. Organizations that access, process, or store government data must demonstrate protective measures in place to protect classified data. In addition, an organization must be in compliance with all federal laws and regulations. This brief serves as an interactive discussion on successfully obtaining an Authority to Operate by the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency and protecting classified government data.

Speaker Bio: Curtis Cook currently supervises six Information Systems Security Professionals (ISSP) supporting the Huntsville Field Office and San Antonio Field Office for Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA).

Mr. Cook served on active duty in the Air Force for almost nine years with assignments that took him around the world. He served five years as 2A451, flight line Instruments, Autopilot and Inertial Navigation System maintainer on MH-53J Helicopters and KC-135 Inflight Refuelers and almost four years as a 3C071 Specialist, in the Information Assurance/COMSEC arena serving as 60th Wing ISSM and Wing Secure Voice Manager for the 60th Communications Squadron at Travis Air Force Base in California. Mr. Cook began his civilian career in 2006 as a system administrator for the County of Yolo, California. Mr. Cook joined (Defense Security Service) DCSA in 2010 as an Information Systems Security Professional and was assigned to the Suisun City, CA Resident Office. Mr. Cook was assigned to the Hurlburt Field, FL Resident Office from 2013 - 2016 where he was selected in 2016 as the ISSP Team Lead for the Huntsville Field Office from 2016 to the present.

Mr. Cook holds an ISC2 CISSP certification, 6 Center for Development of Security Excellence (CDSE) SPeD and is conferred on June 11, to receive a Master of Science Degree in Government Information Leadership with a concentration in Cyber Security from National Defense University - College of Information and Cyberspace. Mr. Cook was the first federal employee to earn all five (CDSE) Graduate Certificates, holds the CISO Graduate Certificate from National Defense University - College of Information and Cyberspace, Mr. Cook also holds a Bachelors in Criminal Justice from Chapman University. Mr. Cook and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Madison, AL and have two sons Lucas and Zachary.
