Dear ISACA Auckland Chapter Members,
The ISACA Auckland Chapter is pleased to announce our next breakfast virtual event, to be held in the morning from 08:00 AM to 09:00 AM NZST on Wednesday, 14th May 2025.
Topic:
Ethics, Dilemmas and Digital Trust with AI
SHORT DESCRIPTION
What can ethics teach us about emerging technologies, and is it possible to address ethical issues in the same way we handle cybersecurity matters? These questions are increasingly pertinent as we navigate an era where technology profoundly impacts every aspect of life.
This talk will delve into the challenges and opportunities at the intersection of AI and Digital Trust, sharing personal insights.
ABSTRACT
Ethical systems, which delineate moral values and codes of conduct within societies and social groups, extend their influence to various human domains like politics and business. Notably, in the 1970s, this influence expanded to healthcare, medicine, biological research, biotechnology, and environmental issues. This expansion gave rise to bioethics, which tackles concerns such as organ donation and transplantation, genetic research, assisted dying, and environmental matters, especially relevant amidst a global social crisis and revelations of various medical malpractices (e.g., eugenics, animal testing). This shift highlighted the urgency in contemplating the right course of action in biological research, public health, social work, and environmental conservation. Bioethics did not just introduce new ethical theories; it also led to the formation of ethics committees and the role of bioethicists in hospitals to navigate emerging dilemmas and contradictions.
Today, as we confront emerging technologies, we face new risks: various forms of bias, lack of transparency, addiction, information bubbles, social manipulation, and threats to democracies, evident in elections worldwide. In response, recent years have seen the development of ethical frameworks and legislations specifically tailored to AI and other emerging technologies. These frameworks aim to translate ethical theories into actionable steps for creating responsible technologies.
Key questions now arise: What are the fundamental principles of these frameworks? How can we effectively implement them, and what types of competencies are required to do so? Addressing these questions is crucial as we endeavor to balance technological advancement with ethical responsibility, ensuring that progress benefits society while safeguarding fundamental values and rights.
