ISACA Northern England Chapter Event  - 17th October 2022, Manchester

Half Day Event the first face to face event of the Chapter’s 2022-23 season will take place in the Deloitte office in the Hanover Building, Corporation Street. Manchester. M4 4AH  on the afternoon of 17th October 2022.

The location is easily accessible from Manchester Victoria railway station and there is a large car park next to the railway station.

The topic of the event is the Hunters. One of the speakers is from the Channel 4 TV series The Hunters.

The event will include 3 excellent speakers, and a buffet luncheon with refreshments at registration.

This event will accrue 3 CPE credits. We have opened bookings early due to a high level of interest. Bookings are open and close at noon on the 29th September. There are limited spaces available so please book as soon as possible if you wish to attend.

Session 1 - The Hunted – Dr Steve Hersee

Steve has participated as one of the Hunters in several series of the Channel 4 television show ‘Hunted’, which simulates a state led hunt for members of the public who have become fugitives from the law. He will run an interactive session to give attendees a taste of the ‘Hunted’ experience by working together to find a virtual fugitive who has ‘gone on the run’. The session will give participants a sense of the show and the analytical techniques used, whilst drawing out wider insights into the practice of security.

Steve’s Bio

Dr Steve Hersee is a Deputy Director for Security i and has worked in a range of security roles across the public and private sector. He started his career as a Royal Air Force Intelligence Officer, before working at the Olympic Intelligence Centre and in the private sector. Following a break to complete a PhD in Cyber Security, Steve moved to the Cabinet Office as Head of Strategy for the National Cyber Security Strategy, before moving to his current employer as Head of Threat Intelligence and now as a Security Deputy Director.

Session 2 - Defending your position and people in a hostile environment – National Crime Agency

This session will over how attacks were planned/assessed and completed against western assets in Afghan. There will be some generic learning from reviewing attacks which will help teams operate and defend in threat areas. It will highlight the importance of preparing for the worst and the value of investing in training and drills in a time of crisis.

Session 3 - Data Skills Hunter Gatherers - the Paradox We Face - Jackie Carter

We hear constantly that there is a skills shortage in the data and tech sector, but is this really true? Jackie will be talking about her experience of developing a data fellowship scheme and how this can attract diverse candidates with analytical, research and professional skills into the tech sector. She’ll ask the question - are we looking in the wrong places?

Jackie’s Bio

Jackie Carter is a Professor of Statistical Literacy at the University of Manchester, a National Teaching Fellow and a one-in-twenty Woman in Data. She is author of the book Work placements, internships and applied social research, and set up the award-winning Data Fellowships programme as part of the national Q-Step initiative. She has placed 330 social science undergraduates since 2014 into public, private and not-for-profit organisations to do paid data-driven work placements. Jackie has spent her career working to make data available for research and teaching, and building bridges between education and the workplace. Her latest research focuses on pipelines into careers in data, and data skills. She believes passionately in learning by doing, and tackling structural inequalities.
