Advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), have raised privacy, data governance, and ethical concerns. There are many privacy implications associated with AI including re-identification of an individual using anonymized data, the lack of consent to use personal information, and the inability to extract personal information if consent is withdrawn. Furthermore, automated decision-making may result in unfair and biased outcomes with a lack of transparency how decisions were made. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), EU’s new privacy legislation, addresses AI and attempts to give consumers control over their data.

We will dissect the GDPR and how it attempts to protect individuals’ privacy. We will also review international AI and Ethics standards that are developing in response to AI and how the international landscape is playing a role in Canadian privacy regulations. In addition to privacy concerns, data used for AI purposes needs to be governed to ensure accuracy, efficiency and effective decision-making.   We will also review how data governance impacts AI and how it can reduce risk.
