ISACA Victoria is pleased to present Aprils luncheon event to be held at the Union Club:
Your health data at risk: Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner investigation into PHSA’s public health database
The content of this presentation has been adjusted so that the focus is not as centrally on the PHSA investigation (though it is covered) as it was previously. As such, we have changed the title to, “Privacy and security in the digital age: Trends, challenges and opportunities”.
Overview
In December, the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) released an investigation report detailing glaring security gaps in the Provincial Health Services Authority’s Public Health Database. The report shone a public spotlight on vulnerabilities that left millions of British Columbians’ personal health information – some of it very sensitive – exposed to bad actors. The investigation underscored the critical role of the OIPC in enforcing BC’s privacy laws and holding public bodies and private organizations accountable for their legal obligations to protect the personal information they collect.
Jeannette Van Den Bulk, Deputy Commissioner, Policy, Adjudication, and Audit, will discuss the investigation, its findings and the increasingly vital role the OIPC plays in protecting and promoting the privacy rights of British Columbians in the digital age. Deputy Commissioner Van Den Bulk will also look at how recent amendments to BC’s public sector privacy law strengthen privacy protections by requiring public bodies to report serious breaches to the OIPC and affected individuals and to build privacy into their initiatives from the outset by developing privacy management programs.
