Topic Summary: India is entering the era of "Data Protection" with the advent of the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) which could be passed sometime during the next quarter. This Act aims at protecting "Right to Privacy" of an individual by regulating the data protection industry. Auditors will have a unique role in the implementation of this regulation since the Act envisages a mandatory annual "Data Audit" for organizations which process the personal data, besides audits during the year in terms of Data Breach Audit, Data Protection Impact Assessment Audit etc. The kind of Audits envisaged under the Act are new opportunities which the audit community should welcome. A career in Data Audit however requires a thorough understanding of the Law of Privacy and Data Protection as well as the Technology Landscape that imposes challenges of different kinds. The brief talk will try to introduce the concept of Data Audits as envisaged in the Act along with a brief introduction of the essence of the Act.
