Mission Critical - Optus - Data security Case Study - Owen Matheson

The largest data breach in Australian history to date. What can we learn from it and become more vigilant with our procedures and policies going forward.

Most experts believe hackers accessed corporate data via publicly accessible APIs. It is suspected that Optus had an application programming interface (API) available online that did not require authorization or authentication to access private customer data. Weak API security is a global issue, with Gartner predicting API security will be the most common threat vector in 2022.

Takeaways - Following the breach, what lessons can organizations take away to prevent an attack as cyber-attacks become increasingly sophisticated?

Introspectus - Ways to Achieve Essential Eight Compliance - Michael Hawkins

The threat of cyber-attack is a persistent and growing concern for organisations of all sizes and industries.  The Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) had developed a set of strategies, known as the “Essential Eight”, to help organisations protect themselves. These strategies are designed to counteract the most common and severe cyber threats, and they have been shown to be effective in reducing the likelihood of a successful attack.

We will discuss the realities of achieving the required Maturity Level of the Essential Eight Model, complications and contradictions within the control definitions, and other obstructions to getting it done, based on existing client case studies.

Then we look at different approaches to assessing your environment for maturity compliance and, of course, when you identify gaps, how do you remediate.
