What does it mean for a Board to own cyber risk?           Nigel A. Jones, MScEcon, FRGS, FBCS

Advice on board-level cyber risk usually comprises a set of principles, or tasks for the board.  These are too often fully delegated to elsewhere in an organisation. Sometimes the issue is pitched as a problem of translation between technical and business languages.  Both of these challenges can be addressed by focusing on board risk ownership as distinct from day to day activities by the security team or users. Nigel discusses a risk ownership narrative for Boards.

Nigel has extensive experience of working with Boards on governance, risk and compliance, and mentoring their executives in information and data as strategic risk in their organisations. He is a Visiting Fellow at King’s College London, Department of Defence Studies, where he teaches ‘Cyber and information operations futures’ to senior military officers. A former CEO of the UK Information Assurance Advisory Council, he is an independent adviser on informational, cultural and behavioural factors in security and conflict. He is a Fellow of BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
