The Future of Web Scraping: Navigating Risks and Preserving Digital Trust

What is the value of an organisations publicly available data? If you publish content on the web, is it free for anyone to take? Questions around the legality of web scraping have existed for many years. Hedge funds and the broader investment communities have already mastered the art of using “alternative data” to augment decision making. More recently a new risk has emerged - AI companies training their models with your data.

This presentation will analyse the broader impacts of scraping and will challenge individuals to assess whether scraping is an existential business risk, a privacy / security issue, a lost opportunity risk or a revenue stream opportunity.

In this presentation we will cover:

  • Technical - why scraping is hard to stop
  • Intelligence - know your adversary - a look inside web scraping communities
  • Impact - the business impact of scraping
