Future of Employment in Cybersecurity: AI and Talent Gap

Presenter: Andrew Reifers, Associate Teaching Professor, University of Washington Information School

Event Details: Join us for an in person ISACA Puget Sound Chapter luncheon at the Columbia Tower Club. Lunch is included, starting at 11:30am and the presentation will start at noon.

Reifers will be discussing the perceived talent shortage in the cybersecurity industry despite its significant growth. The workforce reached 4.7 million workers in 2022, with an addition of 464,000 new workers globally. The shortage is attributed to an increase in cybersecurity threats and a higher value placed on privacy and security by consumers. He believes the industry’s complexity, fragmentation, outdated expectations, and hiring practices are also contributing factors. The scarcity of professionals with the ability to foresee non-existent problems is another issue. He suggests that organizations could benefit from identifying where problems lie on the cybersecurity spectrum and finding potential solutions in advance as this approach could help address the talent shortage and improve cybersecurity measures.
