Cameron Hodson, CPA, CISA, Senior Audit Manager

Cameron's interest in technology was sparked during his time at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he was introduced to the field. Since then, he has been working with companies across various industries to conduct financial and IT audits. As a valuable member of his System and Organization Controls (SOC) practice group, Cameron has developed expertise in efficiency and organization, which has enabled him to streamline processes for control assessments and report building. He takes pride in his technical knowledge and ensures that his clients stay up-to-date with changing accounting standards and implementation timetables.

Cameron's academic and professional achievements include a Master of Accounting (MAcc) degree from BYU, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the same university. During his time at BYU, Cameron served as the former President of Beta Alpha Psi and was also a member of the BYU Management Society, Salt Lake City Chapter. He's also served as the Board Treasurer for the Healthy Environment Alliance of Utah and is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants (UACPA), the Insurance Accounting Systems of America (IASA), and the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA).

An Introduction to System and Organization Controls (SOC) Audits

Over the past 30 years, the System and Organization Control (SOC) framework from the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) has undergone several changes, but it has consistently provided an effective way to assure users of B2B services that their data is secure, available, confidential, private, and processed appropriately (SOC 2) or that it can be relied upon for financial reporting purposes (SOC 1). As incidents of vendor-related fraud continue to rise, there has been a growing interest in finding ways to ensure that third-party vendors have appropriate controls in place. In this context, it is important to understand the different types and scope of SOC reports, as this knowledge is becoming critical in dealing with vendor partners who provide these reports.
