Based on ISACA’s Future of IT Audit study in 2019, Auditing trends for the next five (5) years are (1) becoming increasingly automated, (2) with an increased need for data scientist on the Internal Audit team, (3) strong demand for technical skills, (4) increased expectation of skills and knowledge on across broader subject areas, (5) increased reliance on artificial intelligence (AI) assisted monitoring and analytics and (6) full integration of IT audit into other business areas.
IT Auditors are in a key position to assist the Organization in providing insights on their business environment’s internal controls through the use of data analytics. IT auditors (1) can translate complex technical concepts to non-technical audience, (2) has proficiency in the audit process and the evidence requirements for audit observations and recommendations and (3) has the detailed understanding of the business processes and relevant application systems.
These needed evidences both from a transactional and master records reside in the organization’s database environment and can be analyzed using SQL. Proficiency in SQL for data analysis together with business and/or industry knowledge and strong communication skills are the most sought skills from IT Auditors.
